Richmond, Virginia

We arrived at Courtyard Motel, which is where we had decided to stay last night.  Actually we were looking for a Comfort Inn, but this came along before that.  After a little rest we decided that dinner was in order, so drove  towards "downtown" and found a Chinese Dim Sum restaurant.  After returning to the hotel, I was absolutely "cream crackered" (or in other words very tired) so went to sleep about 9.00 pm which is most unusual for me.  I slept through unti 5.00 am.

After a refreshing shower, had a light breakfast and then drove to historic Richmond.  After a few wrong turns, we decided we would use satnav and arrived at Main Street where we found a public parking place.  Most of the parking is pre-booked, so we parked in the first public place we found and was thankful to leave the car.

We walked down 7th Street towards Canal Street where the American Civil War Center is located in an historic steel factory called Tredegar.  They evidently made armaments for the South during the Civil War.  We walked across a footbridge - see photo - to Brown's Island which is where they have concerts during the summer. It is a nice park situated on the canal .  We then walked up to Virginia State Capitol - see photo.  Very impressive building and then back up to Main Street.  Richmond is a very "hilly" city.

We then decided to go to the Shockoe District which was "downtown".  We passed a Farmers' Market, but unfortunately there was only one stall.  We then found a coffee house and enjoyed that.  Had we walked up (or down) Cary Street, we would have found loads of restaurants, but as there was no signage mentioning this, we only found it on our way back to the car.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum - see photo - is in this area and is situated in an old factory building opposite a railway line.  They have set it out very well and start the tour off with a video of six survivors telling their stories.

Then the long walk back to the car - from 20th Street to 7th Street - and uphill all the way.  We certainly have had our exercise today!!

Got back to the motel safely - with the help of satnav.  Have rested and are now ready for dinner.  Somehow our timings seem to revolve around food!!
