Bakersfield to Monterey

As usual, left after breakfast and eventually found our way out of Bakersfield on to 99N.  Drove for a while on 99 and then on to 46W.  Passed through Wasco which seems to be a leading place for growing.  Loads of fruit groves and some wineries.  It also has a correctional centre.

Mechanical Donkeys
We drove 3,500 miles across the US and never saw one "correctional centre".  No sooner do we hit California, than we see two of them.  We also saw loads of mechanical donkeys.  Not sure whether they were looking for water or oil!

We drove on 101N towards Monterey and decided to have a break in King City.  What we forgot was July 4, so most of the restaurants were closed, but we did find a really good pizza place and so had lunch there.

As we got closer to the coast, we found that the temperature was dropping, so after being in temps of 100 F up, we ended up with 60 F in a matter of 4 hours.  Horrendous wake-up!!

Eventually arrived at Pacific Grove, which is just outside Monterey, where Y had booked a lovely B & B.  Really lovely place, but as they did not do dinner as well, went to the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa Schooners restaurant, which was excellent.  Evidently, Monterey is the capital of the sardine and pilchards world.

Back to the B & B and bed.  Off to Sacramento.
