San Francisco - Last Day

Y had arranged for a harbour tour with brunch so we didn't bother with breakfast at the hotel - not that the hotel breakfast had much to offer!!
Coffee before boarding

We took a taxi to Pier 3 where the ship was docked.  It was part of the Hornblower Line.  We were early, so scouted around for a place to drink coffee.  Just to pass the time!  No Starbucks around, so we had to do with another cafe.  There was only tables outside and luckily the sun was shining - tho' the breeze was a bit chilly. We moved a chair, from another table,  so that we could sit together.  Just as we had finished our coffee, the manager of the cafe asked me to move as I was in violation of a health and safety law, as I was sitting in front of a disabled entrance.  Oh well, as that is the only violation I might have done while here for six weeks, it ain't too bad.
Our Ship

Port of San Francisco!

We boarded the ship at 11.00 am and were shown to our table.  As Y had requested a window table, we had our own bottle of champagne together with two champagne flutes with the ship's name - and some chocolates.  They also gave a box and bag so that it could be taken away safely, tho' A nearly forgot it when we were disembarking!!
The Dining Room

We were offered sparkling wine and orange juice (called Bucks Fizz in the UK and Mimosa in the USA) and coffee.  The meal was buffet-style with hot and cold foods - something for everyone.  There was also a dessert table, but nothing took my fancy.  Had some fruit instead.

There was a musician on board as well.  A one-man band who was very good, and played some lovely music during the trip. Y and A had a dance - see below.

When we left port, we sailed South (I think) towards the Golden Gate Bridge.  Luckily, the sun had burnt most of the mist away, so the Bridge was really clear, although it is impossible to take a full photograph of it.  It looked great in the sunshine.  It is painted  painted in international orange, which I believe is an undercoat for marine paint.  The residents of San Francisco thought that it looked really good, so no top coat was put on. We then sailed around Alcatraz and saw it from all sides.  Unfortunately, we were not able to do a tour of the prison, as it gets booked up weeks in advance.  Maybe next time!!

We then turned North (I think) towards the Bay Bridge, which is also pretty impressive - tho' not painted international orange - and from there came back to the berth at Pier 3.  It was a 2-hour trip and as the sun was shining it was so worthwhile.  Mind you, it would probably have been just as good even if the sun wasn't shining, but the sun certainly made it better.
Bay Bridge

We walked along the front for a while and looked at the stalls selling fresh and organic fruit and food and then took a taxi back to the hotel.  Y and A had a few last-minute things to get, so we parted company and I walked to China Town.  Quite a hike I can tell you, as the hills are practically perpendicular in places.  Anyway I figure it made up for all the exercising I didn't do while we were travelling.  It took me about half an hour to get there, but the coming back was easier, as it was downhill - more or less.

Got back to the hotel and collapsed.  Sorted out our tickets on-line and had them printed out by the hotel, so we are all set for tomorrow.  Quite sad really.  I cannot believe that it is already six weeks since we first left.  I will have to read the blog to remember exactly what we have done, as it's become a bit of a blur!!

Not sure where we are eating this evening, but I think A has found a Greek Restaurant, Myconis on Polk Street, that we might like. It was not bad, but would not recommend it.

Taxi back to the hotel and then to bed.  It will be a long day tomorrow, Sunday, as we are taking off at 16.30 and arrive in London on Monday at 10.40 am.

San Francisco - Friday

Y and A got up late, so we had breakfast at an Irish Pub on Geary Street - Lefty O'Douls.  Not a bad breakfast at not a bad price.

We then went to get the hop-on, hop-off bus for the around town trip.  As I had bought a two day ticket, yesterday, I showed my ticket and they did not request any from Y & A.  We got off at Fishermans' Wharf and had a walk around.  We then decided to get the cable car back to Union Square, which is where all the shops are.  The ride was amazing and the views were fantastic.

As we were let off near the shops, and as we saw a Westfield Shopping Centre, we decided that a bit of retail therapy would be advantageous.  I didn't manage to find anything, but we did see a really nice restaurant serving Singaporian food.  We had a few starters to share and then Y & A went on to Macy's and I went back to the hotel.

Went down at about 5.00 to have some wine at happy hour and Y and A came in at about that time, so we had a drink together.  We then relaxed until dinner which was at 8.30 in a very good restaurant called Fino (which is part of Andrews Hotel on Post Street).

Off on a boat trip around the harbour tomorrow morning, so time for bed.

Lilian - San Francisco - 12 July

Breakfasted at about 9.00 am today then went out to check the city.  Saw a hop-on hop-off bus so decided to take it.  SF is a fascinating city and the architecture is amazing.  A  mixture of modern, 50s, 30s and 1800s - those that haven't come down during the two big earthquakes - the first in 1906 and the second in 1989.

Also saw half of the Golden Gate Bridge as there was a heavy mist hiding most of it.  In all events, it is impressive and must be lovely on a clear day.  The weather was cold this morning but it warmed up in the afternoon and it will probably be cold again this evening.

Also went through the Haight/Ashbury District which was the hub of flower power in the 70s.  Lovely shops and buildings.

Stayed around the hotel as was expecting the "young" couple at about 5.00 pm. The hotel has a happy hour from 4.30 - 5.30 each afternoon, so it wasn't a hardship.  In the event they arrived at about 6.30.  Dropped off their luggage and went to give the car back.  Y has evidently booked a restaurant Finorelli (I think), which is situated in what was, at one time, a swimming pool.  As it is mainly a fish restaurant, the whole decor is based around the sea.  Drop-lights which look like fish and a central light the shade of which is the colour and design of a octopus.  Food was very good - I had spearfish which was quite tasty.

Back to the hotel.  Y went to bed and A and me worked on his notes regarding their Napa Valley/Winery/Lake Tahoe trip.

Yvonne & Andrew Road Trip

Friday 6 July 2012

Aftter breakfast we had a small walk to the mall which turned out to be rather empty and sad, not the shopping experience of the lifetime, which was anticipated.

Lilian was booked on a flight to Seattle to stay with friends for a few days, and so we all drove out to the airport to wish a fond farewell and Y & A drove back to Old Sacramento and parked in the main sttreet which resembled an old wild-west town - board walks and all.  We found a bar for lunch and after a couple of beers walked down to the river to catch a river boat trip, passing impressive houseboats and old steam engines and finally passing under a golden (Tower) bridge.  That evening we headed ten blocks to a Lebanese restaurant, thinking it to be a tapas bar!

Saturday 7 July

Left Sacramento late morning en-route for the Napa Valley (Route 80).  The temperature had risen to 98 F and after a brunch we set off.  The roads were light of traffic and we were soon driving through acres of fruit/nut trees. We stopped at one of the many roadside fruit sellers and bought strawberries.  We arrived at a small town named Winters, very neat and tidy with all the amenities.  We found a lovely Diner and had coffee and milkshake.  \Y was in 7th heaven as her mug was refilled!!  We also found a drugstore for some other essentials.  Leaving Winters we drove along very windy roads into the hills passing an increasing number of (vinarys) with impressive entrance gates.  Our destination was Cottage Grove Inn, a collection of cute little chalets in woodland, very well appointed with rocking chairs on the porch!!

We drank a glass of complementary wine after sampling a few laid on by the host.  Dinner was in the nearby mainstreet - typical American fare - with live music (very good jazz guitarist).

Sunday 8 July

Had amodest breakfast - just in time, then decided to investigate the Napa Valley ourselves rather than trying to organise a tour.  We headed for Napa on highway 29, stopping in St Helena for coffee and iced tea.  We eventually found Downtown Napa - terrible lack of signposts.  We parked up and walked down the main street to the river (Napa Creek) where we found a Diner for lunch, watching the ducks.  We returned to Calistoga via a winery where we sampled a few whites and reds.  Had dinner in a very posh restaurant (they actually admitted that the meal sizes were smaller than usual!).

Monday 9 July

Had breakfast (waffles) and packed up car to head off to LakeTahoe.  Managed to get as far as the high street where certain retail therapy took place, and we were eventually underway.

Joined Freeway 80 passed Sacramento and stopped for lunch at a town called Placerville, a real wild-west town famous for being the first place where gold was found in California in 1848.  More retail therapy and chatted to an English woman who worked in one of the dress shops.  The temp had climbed to 98F as we drove towards LakeTahoe, going through spectacular mountain roads with massive trees either side.  We rounded a bend and saw the Lake - magnificent in the shimmering sunlight.  Our bed for the night was at the Avalon Lodge, just a short walk from the Lake.  We wandered down to the Lake and found a cafe on the shore where we stayed until sunset.

Tuesday 10 July

After a modest breakfast, set off to Emerald Bay on the west side of the Lake, accessed via dramatic winding roads with sheer drops on the edge.  We reached the viewing spot which showed the whole Bay with spectacular scenery. We then said goodbye to Lake Tahoe and headed for Mammoth Lakes.  This route took us into the Sierra Nevada with more spectacular mountains and glacial plains.  We stopped for lunch at Hope Valley where we spent a relaxing hour in the sun - 98F.

Arrived at Mammoth Lakes around 4.30 pm after being delayed by roadworks in the mountains.  Mammoth Creek Lodge was a very comfortable accommodation within easy walks of good restaurants and we had a very good meal to round off the day.

Wednesday 11 July

We decided to have a restful day in preparation of the long drive to San Francisco on Thursday.  So after a late breakfast we set off for the Lakes and headed for the largest, Lake Mary, where we parked by a small marina full of people launching canoes and row boats in a very pretty setting.  The coffee call encouraged us to follow the lake on to Lake George but there was no room to park so we went on to Twin Lakes (actually three lakes).  We stopped for coffee at a general store full of all the essentials for camping and just round the corner found a lovely restaurant where we had a light lunch looking over the lake.

After lunch we went and sat by the water dipping our toes, and spend a peaceful afternoon watching birds and water activities with the mountains riising inthe distance.  Another restaurant this evening, called 'The Restaurant at Convict Lake', in a very remote setting.  We had an interesting chat to a couple at the next table.   It was  early(ish) to bed for an early start in the morning, driving to San Francisco..

Thursday 12 July

We maintained our early start and took a route through Yosemite National Park which was a very windy road rising to 9000 ft above sea level and an incredible landscape of forests and huge boulders - all for a fee of $20.  The temp in the park had dropped to 61F.  We emerged from the Park and headed West via Manteca where we stopped for a cold drink and light lunch.  We then continued West into more crowded roads via The Oakland Bridge and into San Francisco.  We were very pleased to be heading into SF around commuting time as the road out was very heavy with traffic.  We relied heavily on Satty to find our hotel and were running late to return the car by 7.00 pm.  However we successfully found the hotel, unloaded the car and drove a couple of blocks to return it. We were then reunited with Lilian and over dinner recounted our various experiences of the past six days.

(Hopefully photos will be posted, shortly)

Lilian with Tom & Debbie in Sequim (Washington)

Friday 6 July

Was taken to airport by A and Y and checked in for Seattle.  The flight was about an hour and 45 mins.  Met at airport by Rocket transport whindch took me to D and T's door
Talked forever and went to bed pretty late

Saturday 7 July

Tom cooked lovely breakfast next day and we did a little tour of the Sequim inlet near the house.  Also saw the John Wayne Marina.  Evidently, John Wayne used to keep his boat in Sequim Marina (pronounced S'quim).  Had coffee in the town and then came home for lunch.  Was given tour of house - beautiful round house set in 3.5 acres of land.  Very comfortable.  They also have a cute 130 lb dog - a Great Pyranees.

Laura, Tom's daughter, her partner Dennis and children Gitani and Ivy came
over for dinner.  Laura is a landscape gardener and occasionally helps
Debbie and Tom with their huge garden.  Had a lovely evening then off to
bed.

Sunday 8 July

Got up late and had a lazy day on the deck - just sunbathing and reading (actually listening to my i-pod).  The weather is just marvellous with it being cool in the morning and evening and wonderfully warm during the day.Tom is the main chef and cooked a great steak with asparagus.  Debbie does a mean cheesecake and wonderful tuna and pasta salad.  The house is over-run with cookery and gardening books.  I think Tom must have been a chef in a former life. Watched a recent episode of "Lewis", then off to bed.

Monday 9 July

Up early this morning as Debbie and I had decided to take the ferry over to Victoria, British Colombia (in Canada).  Tom made us sandwiches for the journey, as we weren't too sure whether there would be anything to eat on the ferry.  Unfortunately, Tom couldn't come with us as he had to dog-sit!! but he had to drive us to Port Angeles in order to get the Ferry which is about half an hour's journey from Sequim.   In the event we needn't have taken sandwiches as there were bagels and other things on the ferry, but better to be safe than sorry.

When we got off the ferry, we walked over to the Empress Hotel which is the oldest hotel on the island and was built in the 1800s.  Beautifully kept still with lots of the old architecture and interior design.  We then did a hop on-hop off bus tour of the island and stopped at Craigdorroch Castle (which is not really a castle but was a family home built by the owner of a coal mine).  Evidently the locals started calling it a castle, as they had never seen anything quite like it.  It had front and back stairs and a ballroom on the top floor.  There was also a turret room from where you could practically see the whole island.  Wonderful view.

We then got back on the bus which took us on the rest of the tour, through the suburbs.  Saw some wonderful houses and gardens and everywhere there were trees of all kinds.  We also saw the highest totem pole in the world.  Can't remember how tall, but it was big.

Once we were back near the seafront, we found a nice seafood restaurant called Pescatore and had a great lunch.  The chowder wasn't as good as some I have had, but the salad was excellent.  Debbie had wild salmon and asparagus, which she enjoyed.

We came back on the afternoon ferry and Tom met us as the terminal.  Managed to get about an hours' sunshine sitting on the deck.  It was glorious as there was, as usual, a little breeze.  The sun only goes down about 8.00 pm and keeps its warmth until then.  Tom had made a great meal for dinner.  We had Deb's cheesecake for dessert - great.

Tuesday 10 July

This morning went for a drive to Port Townsend, which is the opposite direction from Port Angeles.  The house is about half-way between the two.  We walked along the main street which had some cute shops and then went down to the water where we saw a tall-mast ship, which was in port and being cleaned up.  She had beautiful lines and I wanted to take a photo, but forgot to  charge the camera battery, so missed out on lots of photos of the day.  There was a "Fifties Diner" on the main street - with a colour scheme of pink and green and, as we had the dog with us, we had to sit outside, which wasn't really a problem as the weather was sunny.  We ate hamburgers and fries and all the trimmings.  Tasted really good.  Somehow food tastes somewhat better when eaten *al fresco*.

Drove back and did a detour to see the gargoyle castle, which was lovely to look at as all the fence posts around it were sculpted with different faces.  The property looks like a fairytale castle and can be rented for about $2000 a week.

Once we were home again, I was out on the deck again, sunbathing.  I also picked fresh strawberries, which Debbie grows, and dead-headed her roses.  I could, with some encouragement end up as a horticulturist.  It is quite fascinating to see things growing.

Watched a movie, played with the computer, then off to bed.

Wednesday 11 July

Time seems to go so quickly.  Was up bright and early (for me) as had to leave the house at 1.30 pm and wanted to have breakfast as well as a good lunch before leaving.  Which Tom and Debbie organised brilliantly.  Was taken back to the airport by "The Rocket", and got the plane back to San Francisco.

Arrived at the hotel about 9.00 pm and thankfully my room was waiting for me.  Felt it was too late to eat a meal so bought an avocado and some crisps and that was dinner, which was fine.  Watched Piers Morgan on TV and he really made me sleepy.

More pictures from this trip, later.

Monterey to Sacramento

We left Monterey quite early as we had an early breakfast, and decided to drive up the coast towards San Francisco and then turn inland to arrive in Sacramento.  The drive up was through beautiful country with forests on either side of the road.  Quite refreshing after driving through deserts and seeing only yellow/brown fields and hills.

The Bear of California

We stopped in San Jose for lunch at The Crows Nest which was overlooking the marina.  Had a very good soup and salad and then had a little walk along the front.  Didn't do that for too long, as the wind was getting really cold, not that it stopped people from being on the beach and going in the sea.
Part of the old bridge across the San Francisco Bay

Then it was on the road again, by-passing San Francisco, and turning inland towards Sacramento.  We are staying at a very comfortable hotel called The Citizen, which is in the business district of the town, so it was pretty quiet when we went out to eat, finding a really nice restaurant called The Broiler.
Sacramento - The State Capitol

As I am leaving for Seattle tomorrow morning, to visit with friends who live there, the next blog will only be available from 12 July.  I am leaving the computer with Y & A so that they are able to book what they need while they are on the road.

So wait with patience and watch this space.
Dinner joint

Bakersfield to Monterey

As usual, left after breakfast and eventually found our way out of Bakersfield on to 99N.  Drove for a while on 99 and then on to 46W.  Passed through Wasco which seems to be a leading place for growing.  Loads of fruit groves and some wineries.  It also has a correctional centre.

Mechanical Donkeys
We drove 3,500 miles across the US and never saw one "correctional centre".  No sooner do we hit California, than we see two of them.  We also saw loads of mechanical donkeys.  Not sure whether they were looking for water or oil!

We drove on 101N towards Monterey and decided to have a break in King City.  What we forgot was July 4, so most of the restaurants were closed, but we did find a really good pizza place and so had lunch there.

As we got closer to the coast, we found that the temperature was dropping, so after being in temps of 100 F up, we ended up with 60 F in a matter of 4 hours.  Horrendous wake-up!!

Eventually arrived at Pacific Grove, which is just outside Monterey, where Y had booked a lovely B & B.  Really lovely place, but as they did not do dinner as well, went to the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa Schooners restaurant, which was excellent.  Evidently, Monterey is the capital of the sardine and pilchards world.

Las Vegas to Bakersfield

Left LV after breakfast and took a cab to the airport to pick up the car.  We have a Nissan now, automatic, aircon and all the modcons.

Did not put my licence on the agreement as I will not be with the Hymans from Friday until the following Thursday, so it wouldn't have been worthwhile.

We took I-15 S towards Bristow and then 98 N to Bakersfield.  Not much to ee on that road, but as we drove towards Bakersfield, we could see citrus groves and grapes and the whole area was much greener than in Nevada.

The Green Hills of Bakersfield

We stopped off at Sue's Diner (a 50s experience) and had lunch and something to drink.  It was a great place and really took one back to the 50s and 60s - if you were around then and can still remember!!!
Sue's Diner

50s Diner
Then it was back on the road to Bakersfield where we ended up at The Padre Hotel.  This is a renovated hotel which was originally built in the 20s.  It is very comfortable and very modern now.

We had a pre-prandial drink and then had dinner in the restaurant which was excellent.

Off to bed and on to Monterey tomorrow morning.
